Puerto Rico: Great Place for a Long Weekend
Dubbed by other countries as the Island of Enchantment, Puerto Rico is self-governing Caribbean island, just west of the Virgin Islands and east of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico is recognized for its proximity to the Mona Passage, the main shipping lane used to get to the Panaman Canal.
Although it is independent from the other 50 states, the culture in Puerto Rico is primarily still that of the Caribbean, although mixed with a bit of African, Spanish and of course, native influences. This is why travelling to Puerto Rico will make you feel like you are in a country separate from the United States, even when you practically still are in the US.
Thanks to its coastal figure, Puerto Rico is home to many sandy beaches for you to choose from. Head off to the protected island of Caja de Muertos where you can see its native turtle population. The Guanica State Forest is one of the remaining of its kind in the world. A good historical landmark to visit would be the San Juan National Historic Site, which includes the San Felipe de Morro, San Juan de la Cruz, and San Cristobal forts.
[quote_colored name=”” icon_quote=”no”]Puerto Rico, specifically San Juan, is also one of the new emerging contemporary art destinations of the world, just after Puerto Rican artists like Angelo Otero, Allora & Calzadilla, and Carlos Rolon had risen to the top.[/quote_colored] The best place to spot their works and that of the others is Walter Otero’s gallery – the most important in Puerto Rico, being responsible for the fame of many of its rising artists. If you’re lucky, you can even spot the Trailer Park Project on the Go, which is basically San Juan’s official art gallery on wheels.
Puerto Rico is a very convenient art and tourist destination. All you need is to go there for a weekend, and you’re good to go.
